INDUSTRY REPORTS
An Engineering Analysis of the Indiana Dunes Tests   Note: File Size: 1.86 MB
In 1974, ten years after thousands of people had died in homes 'protected' by ionization smoke alarms, the U.S. government funded testing of residential fire detection equipment.  The results of this two year study, the 'Dunes Tests', were published in July 1976 in two large, complex reports.  These reports were prepared by four people; one was a representative of ITT Research Institute, the other 3 were all representatives of Underwriters Laboratories.
Page 16 of the second report contained the Dunes Test's 'Conclusions'. Item number '1' on the Conclusions page stated that the ionization smoke detector would... 
"...provide adequate life saving potential under most real residential fire conditions...".
Most fire industry officials accepted the report's conclusions and did not posses the necessary training to analyse the content of the report.  But Patton, a registered Fire Protection Engineer, knew something was wrong.  His engineering analysis of the Dunes Tests revealed that the Dunes Tests researchers had falsified the data - the Report's conclusions were inconsistent with the data contained within it!  To help understand why this report was falsified read: 'The Role of UL In America's Deadliest Fraud'
 
'N.I.S.T. Performance of Home Smoke Alarms' 2003 Report Analysis   -  Coming Soon
In 2003 the National Institute of Standards and Technology produced a report about domestic smoke alarms.   Despite numerous court cases, independent scientific studies and TV documentaries regarding the serious limitations of the ionization type smoke detector, this report is often used to justify the continued promotion of the ionization smoke alarm.
The upcoming analysis of this report exposes the ongoing falsification of ionization smoke alarm research and is a must read for all fire industry professionals.
